what you’ll need – whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle feeding
However you choose to feed your baby, or whatever feeding looks like for you right now, you’re doing something extraordinary. And while every feeding journey is unique, there are some essentials that can help make things that little bit easier, and more comfortable for both of you.
This guide walks you through what you might need, whether you're breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or doing a bit of both.
a comfortable feeding spot
Feeding sessions can last a while, especially in the early days, so comfort is key. A supportive chair, a feeding cushion, and a drink within reach go a long way. Having a calm, comfy space helps you and your baby relax.
muslin cloths (lots of them)
No matter how you're feeding, muslins are your best friend. Burping. Spills. Leaky moments. They’ve got you covered - quite literally. Keep a few dotted around the house and one in your bag. Just in case.
bottles and teats
Even if you’re breastfeeding, having a few bottles ready can offer flexibility, whether that’s expressing milk or sharing feeding duties with a partner or support person. When choosing bottles and teats look for:
- BPA-free materials so no harmful chemicals reach baby’s tummy
- A size and flow rate that matches your baby’s age and stage allowing them to feed at their own pace
- Easy-to-clean parts
sterilising kit
Whether you're using bottles for formula or expressed milk, you’ll need a way to sterilise them. That could be an electric steriliser, a microwave, a UV steriliser, or cold-water sterilising tablets. Go with whatever fits your routine and lifestyle.
breastfeeding essentials
If you're breastfeeding, a few extras can make things more comfortable:
- Nursing bras: Soft, stretchy, and designed to make feeding access easy
- Breast pads: To catch leaks
- Nipple cream: A little relief when you need it most
- Breast pump: Optional, but helpful if you're expressing milk or planning to share feeding
formula feeding essentials
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Infant formula (always follow prep and storage guidelines on the pack)
- Formula dispenser: Handy for feeds on the go
- Bottle brush: For proper cleaning before sterilising
- Kettle or bottle prep machine
bibs and wipes
Dribbles and spills are all part of feeding. Bibs and wipes keep things less messy, and your baby a bit drier.
support you can rely on
This one’s not something you can buy - but it matters. Feeding isn’t always easy, and that’s okay. Whether it’s a midwife, a feeding specialist, a friend, or another parent who's been there, having someone to talk to helps. You’re not alone, and you’re doing something amazing.
feeding looks different for everyone
Some parents exclusively breastfeed. Some bottle feed from day one. Many do both. However you feed your baby, what matters most is that they’re nourished, loved, and thriving, and that you feel supported, confident, and cared for too.
So do what feels right for you, take it one feed at a time, and trust that you're doing just fine.
You’ve got this. And we’re here to guide you on your feeding journey.
