top ten newborn baby Q&A

newbon baby question & answer

Bringing your baby home is magical, but it also comes with a million questions (and a little bit of internet searching at 3am). To make things easier, we’ve answered ten of the most common questions about newborns, all in one place.

1. how often should my newborn feed?

Newborns feed little and often, usually every 2 to 3 hours. That’s around 8 to 12 feeds in 24 hours. Whether you’re breastfeeding or formula feeding, follow their cues and don’t worry, you're both learning together.

2. how do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?

Wet nappies are a great clue - expect around 6 or more a day after the first week. Your baby should also seem content after feeding and steadily gain weight. If you’re unsure, your midwife or health professional can support you.

3. is it normal for newborns to sleep so much?

Most newborns sleep 14–17 hours over 24 hours (in short bursts). Every baby is different though, some are sleepy, others alert. For safe sleep, always place baby on their back on a firm, flat surface.

4. what colour should my baby’s poo be?

In the first few days, it’ll be black and sticky (called meconium), then change to green, mustard, or yellow. It might look different depending on how you choose to feed.

5. why is my baby crying so much?

Crying is their way of communicating - hunger, wind, tiredness, overstimulation, or just needing a cuddle. Look at our ‘five ways to soothe your baby’ blog (insert blog link) to help calm your little one. If your baby’s crying seems constant or they seem unwell, check in with your medical team.

6. do I need to bathe my newborn every day?

In the early days, there’s no need to bathe your newborn every day - two or three times a week is plenty. Before their umbilical cord has fallen off, it’s best to stick to ‘topping and tailing’. This simply means using warm water and cotton wool (insert product link) or a soft cloth (insert product link) to gently clean their face, neck, hands, and bottom. It’s a gentle way to keep them clean without the worry of them getting cold. When you do need to use products (insert product link), choose ones that are soft, gentle, and fragrance-free.

7. what’s a soft spot (fontanelle)?

The soft area on top of your baby’s head is called the fontanelle. It’s completely normal and will gradually close.

8. is it okay to take my baby outside?

Yes, fresh air is great for both of you. Just make sure your baby is dressed for the weather and out of direct sun. For peace of mind, always check they’re not too hot or cold by feeling their tummy or back.

9. when will my baby smile?

Those gorgeous first smiles usually appear between 6–8 weeks. And yes, they’ll melt your heart. Until then, your baby is still learning to focus and respond to faces.

10. what do I need to know about safe sleep?

A clear, flat sleep surface is best. Use a firm mattress (insert product link) with a fitted sheet (insert product link). A well fitted sleep bag (insert product link) keeps baby cosy (choose the correct tog for the temperature) and prevents the risk of baby getting tangled in bedding. If you choose to use blankets (insert product link), tuck them in no higher than baby’s shoulders. Always place your baby with their feet to the foot of the bed, and on their back for every sleep – night and naps.

Remember; every baby is different—and so are their needs.

You’ve got this. And we’re here to help you feel confident every step of the way.
