top five must-haves for newborns

mothercare hong kong

Welcoming your newborn into the world is a beautiful (and sometimes overwhelming) time. With so many baby products out there, it can be hard to know what you really need. Here are our five newborn essentials - the kind of items that help you feel a little more ready for those first few weeks.

1. a safe sleep space

Whether it’s a bedside crib, Moses basket, or cot, your baby needs a firm, flat mattress with no loose bedding. A breathable, fitted sheet, and baby-safe sleepwear help create a safe and soothing space for naps and night feeds.

2. feeding essentials

From breast pads, and muslins to bottles and sterilising equipment (insert product link), feeding essentials depend on how you choose to feed your baby.  Whether breast or bottle (or a bit of both) keep the basics close by to make things a little easier day or night.

3. nappy changing

Newborns can go through 10 to 12 nappies a day, so stock up on nappies, gentle wipes or cotton wool, and a good barrier cream. A wipe-clean changing mat and a handy bag for changes on the go are also a must. Having a well-stocked changing station in a few places around the home can make things easier.

4. clothing layers

Soft, breathable cotton baby clothes are best - think short and long-sleeved bodysuits, sleepsuits with built-in scratch mitts, and cardigans for layering. It's recommended that you dress your baby in one more layer than you’re wearing, depending on the room temperature. And don’t forget a hat for going outside.

5. bathtime basics

A baby bath or bath support, soft washcloths, mild baby wash, and a hooded towel are helpful. Bath time can also be a lovely chance to relax and bond with your baby - even in the early days.
